 This is one of the storyboard panels that I got a little carried away with. I can’t help playing with foreground and background elements…and then there’s those light shafts that make everything look better. Click on the detail below to see the full image. Thomas Page or click on the [...]  I’m still working through the boards in the first scriptorium sequence but I keep getting drawn into some of the more involved tonal sketches to get a better feeling for the space. While it’s seriously slowing down my progress on the boards I’m finding all sorts of visual possibilities within the space (lighting, composition, etc.). [...]  As I’m trying to work out the space for the scriptorium I had to work up some tonal studies to establish the mood in the room. While this is probably a far cry from what the finished design of the stained glass will look like I thought the tonal study was quite striking….back to the [...] 
This is an image I’ve taken from the story beats for a short film I want to make called The Temptation of Brother Thomas. The real title for the image is The Procession but “Happy Dance” does a better job of capturing my immediate mood. I recently found out that I received the Research Fellowship [...]  Sorry it’s been a while, Here’s a quick value study of a still life. I’m still looking for a visual style for my Fishbones concept. I’m pretty committed to some sort of woodcut look but in the meantime these value studies help me to sort out the world these characters live in. I was originally going to call this “Sojourners” but that seemed pretty obscure (not that “The Gleaners” is going to win any popularity contests). This image was inspired by a passage in Deuteronomy about orphans, widows, and aliens (or sojourners). Then I remembered the OT laws about over-harvesting fields and making sure to leave the [...]  Here’s a very early sketch of the digital woodcut I’ll be posting next. I really liked this image so I was pretty nervous about actually doing anything with it. I think the final retained the warmth and dignity that I’m getting from the sketch.  This image is from a story panel early on in the first act of the Fishbone story. He’s just thrown his hook in the water and is now settling back for a relaxing smoke. Lots of new challenges with different textures and surfaces. The water not being the least of them. I’m finding that using [...]  Here are six of the steps along the way to the Fisherman Woodcut. I wish I could say it was as organized as it appears. Honestly it’s still pretty messy as I’m experimenting with all sorts of techniques to find a result I’m happy with. I especially like the way the waves turned out.  This one started out as a woodcut attempt but I realized I had too many questions about lighting…light source, shadows, mid tones, etc. So I decided to paint it in gray tones to see what I would get. I suppose at some point I’ll get around to doing the wood cut but in the meantime [...] |
