I’m still trying to figure out just how much of my preliminary work to post…and when. I’m posting the first completed sequence of storyboards (completed for now anyways). This is the third scene in the film in [...]  Thought I’d post some of my research results. I’ve spent the last couple weeks looking for a cathedral I could begin to base Br. Thomas on. Among all sorts of amazing imagery (that I’ll post in weeks to come) is the Wells Cathedral in Somerset England…I may just have to go and visit. [...]  This is the third and last installment of the story beats. Brother Thomas wakes up in a field and finds that once again he is late for work AFTER blowing off the entire day before. With great trepidation he makes his way past the august aisle of statues, up the stairs, and into the scriptorium…. You [...]  Even though the story arc for Br. Thomas is firmly in place the second act leaves lots of room for development. Basically Thomas blows off work that day and finds great joy as he celebrates his freedom with the animals, which ends in a moment of epiphany. From there he sits down to reflect, observe, and [...]  I’m coming to realize that I can’t simultaneously post finished images AND move the Br. Thomas project forward (not while having a family-life and keeping my day-job). So for the time being this blog becomes a forum for posting works in progress…mostly related to Br. Thomas. Here’ a page of rough beats for the first [...]  Here’s a very early sketch of the digital woodcut I’ll be posting next. I really liked this image so I was pretty nervous about actually doing anything with it. I think the final retained the warmth and dignity that I’m getting from the sketch.  Here are six of the steps along the way to the Fisherman Woodcut. I wish I could say it was as organized as it appears. Honestly it’s still pretty messy as I’m experimenting with all sorts of techniques to find a result I’m happy with. I especially like the way the waves turned out.  Here’s how the separate elements break out for the final composite. The lighting on the green screen isn’t super even, given the physical restrictions of the room I’m shooting in, but the Keylight filter in After Effects doesn’t seem to mind. The background itself is a sponge painting approximately 18″ wide. |
