I was originally going to call this “Sojourners” but that seemed pretty obscure (not that “The Gleaners” is going to win any popularity contests). This image was inspired by a passage in Deuteronomy about orphans, widows, and aliens (or sojourners). Then I remembered the OT laws about over-harvesting fields and making sure to leave the [...]
Here’s a very early sketch of the digital woodcut I’ll be posting next. I really liked this image so I was pretty nervous about actually doing anything with it. I think the final retained the warmth and dignity that I’m getting from the sketch.
The sermon yesterday was the Passover story… you know, 12 plagues on Egypt culminating in the death the firstborn. A dramatic story to say the least with all sorts of complicated issues. The image that came immediately to mind was that of Pharaoh weeping over his firstborn. I didn’t realize until afterward that I had [...]
Here’s another attempt at woodcut with Painter. I thought I would have more luck with a much busier image.
This was always one of my favorite Sunday school stories. Especially the part about stoking the oven so hot that it toasted the guards who threw them in.
Here’s an attempt at a woodcut look with painter. Where’s that woodcut button when you need it!
Finally we’re telling some epic stories! It was so good to hear Joseph’s life unfold without sermon points and applications. A really good story, with good characters, a great hero… and lots of morale ambiguity. I’m looking forward to Exodus!
This image is from John 12. Shortly after Lazarus was raised Martha pours some expensive perfume on Jesus’ feet and washes them with her hair. I’ve been looking at Maurice Sendak’s illustrations in The Juniper Tree. They’re a collection of Grimm’s fairytales that he illustrated while drawing heavily on Durer’s Passion of [...]
So here it is Painted in Painter. This is only my second time using painter so hopefully I’ll figure out what all the fancy buttons are for. Right now it’s kind of nice to have access to some color.
Here’s the first of my Sunday Sketches. I draw these while I’m in church and yes I am paying attention to the sermon…most times. Sometimes the sermons even influence the drawing. Mostly I find that sitting in the pew quiets my mind long enough to relax and draw. Something I need more of in my [...]
